Ultimate Substance setzt sich in assoziativer Bezugnahme auf Archäologie, Philosophie, Mathematik und Ritual mit der Hypothese auseinander, dass die Einführung des Münzgeldes im antiken Griechenland einen tiefgehenden Erkenntniswandel mit sich brachte, der zur Entstehung der westlichen philosophischen, wissenschaftlichen und dramatischen Traditionen führte.

With associative references to archaeology, philosophy, mathematics, and ritual, Ultimate Substance departs from the hypothesis that the introduction of coinage in the ancient Greek world effected a profound cognitive shift that was key to the emergence of western philosophic, scientific and dramatic traditions.

Unser Ziel ist es, den Einfluss von Unsicherheit im Kontext diagnostischer Schlussfolgerungsprozesses zu untersuchen.
Unsere aktuelle Forschung konzentriert sich auf präzise ( numerische ) oder vage ( verbale ) probabilistische Verbindungen zwischen Ursachen und Folgen und deren Einfluss auf die Diagnoseleistung und Plausibilitätseinschätzungen bzw. Wahrscheinlichkeitsschätzungen von Hypothesen während des Schlussfolgerungsprozesses.
Vorhersagen normativer Modelle (z.B. Bayes Netze) werden mit empirischen Ergebnissen verglichen, wobei spezielle Analysemethoden für den Umgang mit Unsicherheit (z.B. Fuzzy Pattern Klassifikation) angewandt werden (z.B. Bocklisch, Jahn, Mehlhorn, & Krems, 2008) .
Our intention is to investigate the influence of uncertainty in the context of diagnostic reasoning processes.
Current research focusses on precise ( numerical ) or vague ( verbal ) probabilistic links between causes and effects and their influence on diagnostic performance, plausibility ratings and probability estimations of hypotheses during the reasoning process.
Predictions of normative models (e.g. Bayes nets) are compared with the empirical results and analysis methods especially suitable for dealing with uncertainty (e.g. fuzzy pattern classification) are applied (e.g. Bocklisch, Jahn, Mehlhorn, & Krems, 2008) .
Das dreijährige Forschungsvorhaben soll untersuchen, welche Kombination von Faktoren zum völligen Zusammenbruch staatlicher Institutionen führen.
Dabei steht die Hypothese im Mittelpunkt, dass es insbesondere die Verhaltensweisen bestimmter autoritärer Regime sind, welche den Staat von innen schwächen und aushöhlen, die zu einem besonders drastischen Kollaps öffentlicher Institutionen führen.
In Vorarbeiten konnten 20 Beispiele für Staatskollaps seit 1960 identifiziert werden, die mit einer gleich großen Kontrollgruppe verglichen werden sollen.
This research project will investigate which combination of factors leads to the collapse of state institutions.
The main hypothesis is that in particular the conduct of certain authoritarian regimes, which erodes the state and weakens it from within, is most likely to lead to a dramatic collapse of public institutions.
Preliminary work has identified 20 examples of state collapse since 1960, which will be compared with a control group of equal size.

Im Gegensatz zu der Hypothese, dass Sprache aus einem einzigartigen genetischen Ereignis hervorging, welches ein hochspezialisiertes Sprachorgan im Gehirn entstehen ließ, zeigen diese Modelle, dass entwickelte Kognition und soziale Interaktionsmuster die entscheidenden Faktoren gewesen sein müssen.

We now know how to build robots that establish both a lexicon and an inventory of perceptually grounded concepts about the world, and recent experiments have shown how human-language-like case grammars could emerge in situated embodied language games.
In contrast to the hypothesis that language originated in a unique genetic event that gave rise to a highly specialised language organ in the brain, these models show that advanced cognition and social interaction patterns must have been the crucial factors.

Wir nutzen die erhobenen morphologischen und funktionellen Daten als Input für unsere biophysikalische Modellierung, die wir in Zusammenarbeit mit Fred Wolf, Arbeitsgruppe Theoretische Neurophysik am MPI für Dynamik und Selbstorganisation durchführen und die uns hilft unsere Hypothesen zu testen und neue Experimente zu planen.
Unsere Arbeitsgruppe wird durch die MPG, die Universitätsmedizin Göttingen und die DFG durch den Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 889 und das FZT/EXC Center for Nanoscale Microsopy and Molecular Physiology of the Brain unterstützt.

We use the acquired morphological and functional data as input into our biophysical modeling that we perform in collaboration with Fred Wolf, Theoretical Neurophysics Group, MPI for Dynamics and Self-Organization and which in return helps us to further test our hypotheses and design new experiments.
